Training Log Week 33 – Ski Touring at Callaghan Valley

photo[1]
Had a pretty amazing long weekend ski touring in Callaghan Valley on an AST 1 course with Coast Mountain Guides. The Journeyman Lodge (below) served as our base for exploring the Callaghan Valley.

I made a couple of rookie mistakes on the first day. I wore too much clothing, carried a pack that was too heavy which lead me getting over-heated.  Sweating and being over-heated is bad news in the backcountry. So I’d say I learned a lot in terms of what to expect next time. What I really need though is a light gortex shell – which I don’t have because I told myself I’m not going to buy one until I can do a chin up. So, I need to get back to the gym and get that chin up done so I can get that shell.

Notes on the Journeyman Lodge at Callaghan:  If you enjoy snowshoeing, cross country or backcountry skiing, you need to get out to the Journeyman Lodge. It is an awesome cozy lodge in the middle of a winter wonderland.

Training Log

Monday: Trampoline
Tuesday: rest day (tweaked my back at Trampoline)
Wednesday: 45 min run*
Thursday: rest day
Friday: 5 hour ski tour
Saturday: 1 hour ski tour
Sunday: Epic 7 hour ski tour
* No speed session this day as the track was covered in ice and snow

Things that went well this week:

  • Finally went ski touring. It kicked my butt – that was the most challenging physical activity I have taken part in.

Lessons Learned for Next Time:

  • Do a chin up so I can buy a gortex shell to be more comfortable in the snow.
  • Pack light for ski touring.

Journeyman Lodge looks incredible! Definitely adding it to the must-visit list. Loved the Callaghan Valley when we were in Whister in August!

You should definitely head up there. It was so much fun – a winter-wonderland with amazing food!
